Why Not Languages? Resources for school teachers and pupils

Why study languages?

TheseÌýresources aim toÌýinspire pupilsÌýto include languages amongstÌýtheir subject choices for GCSEÌýand A level, and to consider studying them at university.Ìý Find out why languages are important, rewarding and useful, and enjoy some taster activities to discover new skills and languages. Ìý

'WhyNotLanguages' is an annual programmeÌýof widening participation events and activities for schools (mainly in the East of England) with low participation in Higher Education. These events promote and enhance language learning in schools, andÌýencourage pupils to continue with their language studies atÌýGCSE, A-Level and at university level.ÌýWe work in partnership with colleagues at the University’s Language Centre and the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies toÌýcreate targeted resources andÌýactivities for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.

Attendance is by invitation and demand for places is high. We regret that it is not usually possible to give places toÌýall schools that apply. If you teach languages in a state school in the East of England and would like to be included in our invitation list, please email outreach@mmll.cam.ac.uk

In response to Covid-19 and the move to online events, we created thisÌýrange ofÌýonline 'WhyNotLanguages' resources, which are now available on an ongoing basisÌýfor independentÌýuse by school teachers and students.
